Joni

The warrior runner ignores the pain

And pushes on.

The gentle woman educates children for a lifetime

And pushes on.

The warrior runner charts miles month after month, year after year

And pushes on.

The gentle woman smiles warmly, treating people kindly, as only she can

And pushes on.

The warrior runner fights off injury from pounding the pavement

And pushes on.

The gentle woman lovingly cares for her elderly mother

And pushes on.

The warrior runner wants only to save some cherished mementos

And pushes on.

The uncaring water rises fast, enters her home

And pushes on.

  1. Great tribute. When I was a fledgling runner, Joni was an inspiration. I was young and full of what young men are typically full of and Joni became the rabbit that I chased. More often than not, I didn’t catch her. I didn’t really know her, but before and after races it was evident that she had that good spirit that drew people. While I calculated my splits, she talked to friends. Running was a big part of Joni, but clearly, she knew what was important in life.

    Nice work, Andrew.

    1. Thanks Joe. I was never a runner, but a met her when I was helping coach out at Hayes as a college student. I always saw her out there running and I borrowed some thoughts from other runners I knew. She was just such a sweet person to Myssy and I, I just couldn’t get her passing out of my mind. Such a tragedy.
